A picture of the boats on the river during the fireworks in Riverside. You can see the Courts of Justice on the left.

(It's actually a detail from 'The Thames on Lord Mayor's Day', by Canaletto.)

Happy (early) birthday, dear heartofoshun! Here are a pair of drabbles related to Richard and Alec's first night.
Title: Midnight/Morning Author: just_ann_now Time Period: "The Duke of Riverside" (Pre-Swordspoint) Characters: Richard, Alec Word Count: 100 words and 200 words Warnings: None Disclaimer: These characters belong to Ellen Kushner, may she be forever blessed. Summary: After the first night. Author's note: A birthday present for heartofoshun. Not the thing I've been piddling at for the past three years; something entirely new!

Summary: A gap-filler set towards the end of Privilege of the Sword. Lord Ferris learns some very interesting news. I wish these characters were mine, but they're Ellen Kushner's!
A quadrabble.
An Ominous Development Ferris regarded his newest informant coldly. “You have news for me?” The man nodded. “Yes, my Lord. You see, Lord Galing’s father’s coachman is me wife’s cousin’s husband.” “What of it? Get on with it, man!” Ferris snapped. “Well, it was him what told me. ‘Fred,’ he said, ‘I’ve got news for you.’ See, it were just after New Year. He went to pick up Galing and Davenant and Hetley from Highcombe. It seems Duke Tremontaine took them out there and left them there.” Bored, Ferris picked up a pencil and twirled it between his fingers. “So the Mad Duke abandoned them in an empty house. That isn’t news! If that’s all you have to tell me, get out.” “But it weren’t empty, sir!” the informant protested. “That’s what I’m telling you. He was there, him who you’ve been asking about. Our George saw him there – Richard St Vier!” Ferris’s pencil snapped in two. “St Vier? Are you sure?” “Yes sir. As sure’s I can be – I’ve not seen him with my own eyes, but our George swears to it. He remembers him from Riverside, see. He used to be a barman at …” “Never mind all that!” Ferris tapped his finger on the desk, thinking. So, St Vier was still alive. When he had returned to the city from the frozen hellhole of Arkenvelt, there had been no sign of St Vier by Tremontaine’s side. Ferris had assumed him dead, but it seemed he had been mistaken. Ferris tossed the man a gold coin, twice the agreed price. “Thank you. You’ve done well. Now get out, and forget you ever came here.” When the informant had gone, Ferris paced the study, scarcely able to contain his glee. Highcombe was barely a day’s journey away. St Vier was within his reach. No longer an active swordsman, the sedentary life at Highcombe would have softened him. A few guardsmen would be able to take him easily, despite his legendary ability; and then where would the Mad Duke be, for all his arrogance and hauteur? He glanced at the clock. Tremontaine waited in the wasp-striped drawing room even now. Once the matter of the marriage contract had been dealt with, and the Duke sent on his way, the rest would be easy. He rang for a servant. “Send for His Grace David Alexander Tielman Campion, if you please. I’ll see him now.”

I read The Fall of the Kings recently and was inspired to start a fanfic about what happens to the students a few years after . Then I moved onto other things and never really finished the story arc I had planned. Oh well...I thought I would post it anyway. Also, apologies to psuedo-catalyst for the Godwin/Fremont ship. It became my headcanon too after I read her fics. Edit: Disclaimer, these characters belong to the wonderful Ellen Kushner, not me.
( Graduation )
Oh, I also made a Fanmix for Fall of the Kings. The Riverside books really get stuck in your head, don't they?

Hey guys, mod here.
I've been getting some messages indicating that the posts are suddenly moderated now? I didn't change this at all, so unless there's another mod I forgot about, then LJ is freaking out. I honestly don't spend any time on LJ anymore, so I wondered if anybody else wanted to step up and be mod/maintainer of this community? If so please let me know and I'll hand over the reigns asap!
Sorry about the slow response, and for shirking my responsibilities as maintainer. :( A thousand apologies.
- Meg
EDIT: Never mind, fixed the moderated entries thing! All posts should be accepted automatically now. Still though, if anyone wants to be maintainer/mod, let me know.

Hello, there! I am new to the wonderful world of Riverside, and I look forward to participating in this community and getting to know you all. (I also write a lot of Tolkien fanfic--I understand there's some overlap.) Here is my first Swordspoint impressions.
(Following review text consists of messages that I may have sent to just_ann_now, who pimped this book so hard that I finally caved and ordered it from Amazon.)
( did I mention I have a degree in English literature? )

A Swordspoint ficlet, set immediately after Alec becomes Duke.
Revenge Is Sweet Towering piles of paper surrounded the Duke Tremontaine’s desk. “Look!” he exclaimed, indicating one teetering heap. “Properties I own. These are down on Riverside. Who’d have thought it?” He began waving deeds at Richard. “Marie. Rosalie. Martha. Most of the Old Market. Just think of it, when we were drinking and dicing there; and all the time I owned it all…” “Alec,” Richard said calmly. “You can’t start charging them rent. Especially not Marie.” “No? Oh, I suppose you’re right.” Alec did not look perturbed, which worried Richard. “But do you remember The Feathers?” Richard nodded. Alec had picked one fight too many there, and got them both thrown out. “I remember.” Alec fingered a thick sheaf of ivory-coloured paper embossed with red wax. His grin widened. “So do I. So do I …”

Delurking to post a few icons made in response to just_ann_now's wish list on her journal.
I made her a few and she thought it would be a good idea to share them here.
In response to the request for ""some icons related to old cities, old cities' bridges, old universities...anything that carries the flavor of the world of Swordspoint. " I made these from photos taken in Italy last year - they could have text added if you want -

And in response to her request for "or how about art or a manip of Theron's tattoo? " I made these, both from pictures of actual tattoos of ivy/oak.

Come to think of it, by delurking I am also fulfilling, in a very small way, her first request too! But I fear I am unlikely to write much in this fandom for the foreseeable future as I have so many stories in my brain for my other main one(s) still to get onto the screen.

Icons for me are like little iced cakes. Anyway, I had some finished and others waiting to be made on my hard drive, so at Ann's prompting earlier I made icons. Find them here: http://heartofoshun.livejournal.com/380315.html.

Title: Stillness Ship: Alec Campion/Richard St. Vier Rating: PG Word Count: 1,055 Warnings: None Summary: It's the quiet moments that Richard values the most. Notes: Written for Yuletide 2011. I'm participating in the Fandom Snowflake Challenge (more info here). Today's activity is to post a Wish List. My three wishes all pertain, unsurprisingly, to the Swordspoint fandom.
- I wish we had more people involved in it! It's always a Yuletide fandom, and people are reading all those Yuletide stories. I wish folks would stop by the communities, _riverside at LJ, or
riverside_dw, its lonesome counterpart there, and join in the fun reading, writing, and commenting. If you're unfamiliar with our lovely fandom, snycock has written an excellent introduction here. Come on over! We don't bite!
- I'd dearly love some icons related to swords, swordfighting, swordfighting ladies; also, some icons related to old cities, old cities' bridges, old universities...anything that carries the flavor of the world of Swordspoint.
- Fanart related to The Fall of the Kings - something mythic and mysterious relating to the northern kings, their wizards, oak, ivy...or how about art or a manip of Theron's tattoo?
His skin was a little flushed, and winding up his chest to his throat was a tracery of leaves so beautifully etched that it might almost have grown there of itself, like ivy on a stone wall. The ivy leaves were intertwined with oak. Basil lifted his hand to touch the decoration and hesitated, overcome. *Sigh* Wouldn't it be loverly?
Edit: curiouswombat has added some gorgeous icons, photographs from Italy that could easily be Riverside and the City. Look here!

So, prompted by Ann: "A city he had loved with his whole heart."
Warning: un-beta-ed, written in about half an hour. Also severe angst, because that scene broke my heart more than any other - and also because, you know, it has Alec in. ( "You've changed so much..." )
